The 2004 Phillies season was a bit of a disappointment and I am sad to see my childhood idol, Larry Bowa leave the franchise, but the new ballpark is beautiful and it looks like David Bell, Mike Lieberthal, and Kevin Millwood will carry the Phillies to a pennant in 2005.
How ridiculous would it be if I were talking like that today? What kind of credibility would I have as a fan if I were rehashing old news, totally out of touch with today’s reality?
Last week, the City Controller released an audit of the Fairmount Park Commission that covered Fiscal Year 2005, which ran from July 2004 to June 2005.
That is way old news.
With the city in fiscal crisis, this five-year-old audit does nothing to inform Philadelphians about the workings of our government.
More important, the City Charter charges the Controller with the responsibility to audit every governmental agency each year, but — in apparent violation of the Charter — the current Controller is not doing that job.
The Phillies won the World Series in 2008. (I can’t say that enough and I am still giddy when I do say it.)
Talking about the 2004 Phillies is irrelevant and unimportant.
Philadelphia is in fiscal crisis today. Talking about what happened in 2004 is not helping us solve our financial problems.
The Charter is clear and the job of the Controller is clear. If our current Controller does not want to do that job, I will do it for him.
